Forestry England is thrilled to announce the grand opening of newly developed mountain bike trails on Deadwater Fell in Kielder Forest which includes a challenging new 650-metre red grade trail alongside 565 metres of significantly upgraded black grade trails.
Former world champion mountain biker’s Manon Carpenter & Adam Brayton officially inaugurated the trails at a special launch event. on 6th May 2025.
Perched on Deadwater Fell above Kielder village, riders will enjoy spectacular panoramic views across Kielder Forest, the North Pennines, and the Scottish Borders.
Mountain bikers can expect an exhilarating, pulse-pounding experience as they navigate the technically challenging features of the new trails. The red grade route delivers fast-flowing sections and bermed corners that build momentum and excitement, while the black grade trails offer heart-racing drop-offs and technical rock gardens that will test even the most experienced riders. Both trails have been designed to maximize the breathtaking elevation of Deadwater Fell, offering riders not just an adrenaline rush but also ever-changing perspectives of one of Britain's most stunning landscapes as they descend.
These new trail sections enhance Kielder's already impressive network of off-road cycling routes, which cater to riders of all abilities – from relaxed family outings on the Lakeside Way to technical descents that challenge even expert riders.
In January, Forestry England relaunched an upgraded red-grade trail previously known as the Lonesome Pine trail, following damage caused by Storm Arwen in winter 2021.

By offering progressively challenging trails, we're creating opportunities for riders to develop their skills while experiencing the incredible natural beauty of Kielder Forest.The sensation of emerging from dense woodland onto ridgelines with epic 360-degree views creates a truly unforgettable mountain biking adventure that we hope will keep cyclists coming back time and again. These additions cement Kielder's position as one of the UK's premier mountain biking destinations."
The trails were constructed by specialist contractors Architrail Velosolutions, known for their expertise in creating sustainable and exciting mountain bike routes.
This launch will complement the recently refurbished Kielder Forest Bike Centre, managed by Gateshead-based Team Cycles, which provides visitors with bike hire, maintenance services, and expert local knowledge.
The enhanced trails will attract new cycling events to Northumberland, providing valuable support to local accommodation providers, hospitality businesses, and other tourism enterprises across the region.
